The Raymond Williams Foundation (RWF) has provided support and funding for a number of projects and courses at ARCA Colleges over the past two years.
For more on RWF aims and the support provided visit: www.raymondwilliamsfoundation.org.uk . In essence, RWF subsidises courses to bring costs for students down to assist viability. Examples of success include, the annual Raymond Williams w/ends on big social and political issues at WMC with 40 students; a Socrates w/end with 35 and a Big Questions mid-week with 25 at BM. Other residential and day subsidized courses have run successfully with smaller groups; for example a Geology Day at Berwick-upon-Tweed. RWF can, in principle, provide support for courses at any ARCA College. Details and application form on above web-site or contact derektatton@btinternet.com – phone 01538 370067 – to discuss.
Within the above project, from Spring 2011, RWF will subsidize individual adult students or small groups for ‘residential library retreats’ – short away-breaks for reading, writing, research, discussion within a quiet ‘library ambiance’ at ARCA and other residential centres. Details as above.
ARCA link to pub, café and bar discussion groups
The network of discussion groups is wide and growing, including Philosophy in Pubs (PiPs); Café Philosophique, Sci-bars, Pub Discussion Circles and so on. Detail through links with RWF web as above. These groups are totally informal, costs are minimal with attendance at meetings usually free-of-charge. The network has , however, now extended to subsidized and ‘budget priced’ day and WEA-partnership residential courses; eg, the above Big Questions mid-week at BM. More information from RWF as above.
